Cybersecurity Weak Spots in Retail

Over the past year, the retail industry has suffered multiple ransomware attacks and data breaches, which have highlighted weaknesses in their cybersecurity plans. As more retail business is conducted online due to the pandemic, experts are pushing for the retail industry to improve their cybersecurity practices. A recent cybersecurity study surveyed over a thousand retail companies and employees globally to reveal average and below average cybersecurity ratings. While scores for communication were high there were many other lower scores that call for big improvements.
Overall, the survey found that many employees have a minimal understanding of cyber threats and the risks they can pose to a company. Better cybersecurity training is much needed in order for employees to understand the value of company data and the types of existing threats. As training is conducted, experts highlight that employees will learn differently and to tackle the “what’s in it for me” issue. Lastly, it’s important to note that certain methods of training don’t apply to all employees so tailoring the approach to the topic of cyberthreats is crucial.
