Hospital Faces One of the Largest Ransomware Attacks in U.S. History

Over the weekend Universal Health Services, a large hospital chain in the U.S., experienced a widespread cyberattack that affected over 400 of their locations. While the type of attack hasn’t been confirmed, all signs point to it being a ransomware attack. Staff reported over the weekend that computers were shutting down on their own and they had to start manually filling out patient files with pen and paper. Without the ability to access data and reports, patients could face serious health consequences from not being able to receive proper care. As the hospital chain begins their week investigating the attack and working to get their systems up and running, their statement for now is that they’re experiencing “an IT security issue.”
