Stay Alert: Election Cyber Attacks and Misinformation

In light of the 2020 presidential election coming to a close tomorrow, it’s important to be mindful of potential cyber threats and misinformation. Earlier this month, what was thought to be a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against a voter registration site for Florida made headlines. It was later confirmed that the issues stemmed from misconfigured computer servers. Nevertheless, the false alarm has raised awareness of potential cyberattacks against polling places and the election. In the past two months, both the FBI and Google have warned against DDoS threats against the US election and they are consistently monitoring hacking groups around the world.
Officials state that these attacks are usually deployed to affect voter confidence and can lead to misinformation. While other countries have had their elections impacted by DDoS attacks, the US is ramping up security on their systems in hopes of deflecting hackers.
