U.S Hospitals Brace for Ransomware Attacks

Record breaking numbers of ransomware attacks targeting hospitals have been reported this year and cyber criminals don’t seem to be slowing down. Currently, hospital networks in three states, California, New York, and Oregon are suffering ransomware attacks caused by Eastern European cybercrime group Wizard Spider. These attacks have led to major gaps in their systems causing staff to exclusively use paper as means for record keeping. This has also limited the ability of hospitals to transfer patients, and update records online.
Government officials have identified the ransomware used as Ryuk and Trickbot, which makes it impossible to use the affected device until ransom is payed. The recent attacks come as somewhat of a surprise as it was originally thought that Trickbot had recently been defeated. With many other hospitals across the country bracing for ransomware attacks, they have been advised to disconnect from the internet when possible, employ backup systems, and exclusively use company email accounts.
