From 2019 to 2020, the average demand from ransomware has increased by 100% according to a report by Coalition. With ransomware attacks occurring more frequently now and their severity becoming greater, many question how to stop newer more powerful ransomware like Maze. Recently, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) made it illegal to pay ransom to cybercriminals. Their reasoning is rooted in the idea that ransomware payments contribute to their illegal activities making them a larger threat to national and foreign security in the future. OFAC announced that they can hold any organization civilly liable for paying ransom even if they are unaware of the transaction. With new penalties and implications surrounding ransomware, organizations of all sizes should ensure their network and endpoint security to avoid being attacked.
