As 2020 comes to a close, more data breaches are being reported for many organizations in the healthcare industry. The second largest health data breach of 2020 targeted Dental Care Alliance (DCA), which supports 320 practices across the country. The breach was first discovered in October and has compromised the data of 1 million patient. The information ranges from diagnoses and treatment to bank account numbers and insurance data. Since the attack, DCA has taken steps to prevent future incidents like issuing password resets and implementing more security training.
A hospital in California, Sonoma Valley Hospital, also recently experienced a data breach that impacted 67,000 patients. This discovery comes two months after the cyberattack was launched. The stolen data was sold on the dark web for a few days before being taken down and now the hospital is taking steps to rebuild their network. Although a large amount of data was compromised, it was reported that high profile financial and personal data wasn’t affected.
Additional data breaches have impacted healthcare labs and medical supply chain businesses. Threat actors have hacked these systems to steal patient information and expose vulnerabilities within networks. Database misconfigurations are another issue reported among data breaches. With weakened systems, sensitive information is more likely to become unencrypted and visible to the public.
