As the U.S is in the midst of a cybersecurity emergency, new threats emerged on Thursday morning. The Department of Homeland Security reported that Russian hackers accessed a variety of government and private entities through other methods unrelated to SolarWinds software. Experts have determined that this new threat presents a “grave risk” to all levels of government in the U.S. This discovery comes after a record number of cyberattacks this year and officials are still trying to determine how this attack went undetected for so long. Last week it was reported that this cyber campaign has been active since March of this year and Russia has had consistent access to the Department of Homeland Security Networks. Cybersecurity experts are hoping this serves as a wakeup call to security officials as they try to secure the networks again and prevent future cyberattacks.
