Cyberattacks Are Moving Past Ransomware in the Healthcare Industry

New cyberattack tactics are emerging as hackers in countries like Iran are advancing their hacking techniques. With healthcare organizations seeing an increase in cyberattacks due to the pandemic, they are now faced with new challenges on how to keep their data safe. An even more dangerous malware called wiper malware has now been detected by many U.S. institutions and the healthcare industry needs to become equipped with new methods to divert attackers.
It has become the norm for healthcare organizations to pay the ransom after they experience a ransomware attack but new malware like wiper is leading to the possibility of information being destroyed or stolen. Wiper malware not only destroys all of an organization’s information but the systems themselves then need to be reformatted, which can cost millions of dollars. These attacks can be detrimental to a healthcare organization leaving them unable to operate for months at a time. It’s crucial that they have a plan in place for the worst case scenario, losing all patient and organization data. Cybersecurity CEO Caleb Barlow suggests that an incident command system is the best solution for having an established plan when entire data systems are completely erased.
