This week hackers gained access to over 150,000 security cameras managed by Verkada, a video and AI security start-up. Camera locations include hospitals, schools, gyms, and Tesla warehouses. The group that carried out the attack, Advanced Persistent Threat 69420, admits that they stole data from Verkada to show how easy it is to hack into third-party connected devices. It’s reported that they gained access through an administrator account and they were able to access a complete client list and camera feeds from hundreds of clients. After the network was breached Verkada was contacted, and they were able to remove the hackers from the system. This recent attack serves as a reminder for companies to ensure that connected devices are segmented so that in the event of a cyberattack, lateral movement in the company network can’t occur.
