Vermont Health Network Returns Online After Ransomware Shut Down Systems

At the end of October, The University of Vermont (UVM) Health Network was hit with a large-scale ransomware attack. On November 24, it was reported that they have finally restored access to their electronic health record (EHR) system for both inpatient and ambulatory locations. The return of the Epic EHR comes after a month of staff having to manually log all patient information while systems were being restored. During the restoration of systems, the Army National Guard’s Combined Cyber Response Team also helped to recover information. While most of the system is running again, there are still some features that are unavailable.
UVM isn’t the first health system to experience the effects of EHR targeted ransomware. Over the past year, several hospitals and healthcare providers across the country have also been victims of similar ransomware attacks. Some of these providers are still working to get their systems up and running months after the attack. Other healthcare providers have also experienced website outages and data breaches this year as a result of a ransomware attack.
